How to create backspin for the perfect green approach
If playing towards the green, with the flag tucked behind a bunker or a short pin position you may need to play with some degree of backspin to get close to the flag.
There are several factors that determines how much backspin you can put on the ball.
The ball needs to be on a good clean lie for the club face to make contact with
the ball (don't try and make the ball spin back from the rough) a great time to use the backspin technique is on the fairway.
The Ball
Its very important when creating the backspin shot, you have a soft covered ball, the soft covering allows the ball to penetrate further into the groves of the club face.
Other Factors
Backspin is more effective with a head wind on a soft green, or when the green slopes in the direction of the spin.
Choice of club
A critical choice when it comes to backspin is choosing the right club for the job, the more lofted the club the more it can spin the ball. Ideally you want to use a sand wedge or a pitching wedge for maximum backspin.
Setting up for the shot
Place the club behind the ball and open up the club face slightly, set up in an open stance aiming you body to the left of the target and put 60 to 70% of your weight on the left foot.
The ideal position is to have the ball in the middle of your stance, while keeping your weight on the left foot makes the club swing down at the ball at a steeper angle creating more spin.
With such a steep swing the club face would normally cut down into the ground
but the open club face allows the club to bounce off the ground and slide under the ball
Bunker shots
Yes its possible to get backspin from a bunker shot, you have seen the pro's do it, now its your turn. make sure you hit the ball before the club face touches the sand, follow all the direction's above and you will soon be spinning the ball back from the bunker.
